The election is often called the “Revolution of 1800” because political power passed peacefully from the Federalist Party to the Democratic-Republican Party. Thomas Jefferson and Aaron Burr received the same number of electoral votes, so the House of Representatives had to choose the President. After 36 ballots, Jefferson was elected. The crisis led to the adoption of the Twelfth Amendment, which introduced separate electoral votes for President and Vice President.

The election marked the end of the so-called Era of Good Feelings, when the Democratic-Republican Party had dominated national politics. Four major candidates competed for the presidency. No candidate received a majority of electoral votes, so the House of Representatives elected John Quincy Adams, although Andrew Jackson had received more electoral votes and more popular votes. The result contributed to the formation of the modern Democratic Party.

The election took place amid a severe national conflict over slavery and its expansion into the western territories. Abraham Lincoln of the newly established Republican Party won the presidency without carrying most of the Southern states.
